The San Jose Museum of Art seeks a senior/chief curator (contingent on experience) with an interest in innovative curatorial approaches, collaborative ventures, and community engagement. The ideal candidate will have a thorough knowledge of contemporary art as well as a strong art-historical background, with eight to ten years of experience in the field and established peer networks. Excellent organizational, research, and communication skills; a commitment to diversity and cultural context; a proven track record of publications and projects of note; successful grant writing and donor cultivation; and prior budget management are required. The ideal candidate will have broad interests in art, architecture, and design as well as in multi-disciplinary approaches. He/she will be a strong, open team player able to develop, lead, and manage new strategic initiatives.

The San Jose Museum of Art is a modern and contemporary art museum that reflects the diverse cultures and innovative spirit of Silicon Valley. The Museum fosters awareness of artists’ broad contributions to society: it engages general audiences with the art of our time and the vitality of the creative process. SJMA presents ca. ten exhibitions a year, (including thematic installations of its growing permanent collection) and ca. 50 public programs, ranging from lectures and panel discussions to DIY workshops. SJMA is an acknowledged leader in interpretive practices, including the creative use of technology for in-gallery education.

The senior/chief curator will supervise and mentor an excellent associate curator and dynamic junior curator. He/she reports to the director of the Museum and is a pivotal member of an energetic senior staff team. The senior/chief curator works closely with donor support groups, particularly in the planning of programs and trips, and is a key public representative of the museum.

ZER01: The Art and Technology Network is seeking a curatorial intern to assist the Artistic Director and Assistant Curator in tasks related to the curating, programming and implementation of the 2010 01SJ Biennial.

01SJ BIENNIAL The 01SJ Biennial is an international contemporary arts festival produced by ZER01 that focuses on the intersection of art, technology, and digital culture. Under the theme “Build Your Own World,” the 3rd 01SJ Biennial will take place September 16-19, 2010 in San Jose, CA, with significant public programming beginning September 4th. The 2010 01SJ Biennial is about how powerful ideas and innovative individuals from around the world can make a difference and come together to build a unique, citywide platform for creative solutions and public engagement. POSITION DESCRIPTION The position is based in San Jose, CA, USA. The curatorial intern will report to the Assistant Curator and assist in the planning and production of a range of programming for the 01SJ Biennial including AbsoluteZER0, Out of the Garage, Into the World, public art, performances, Future Films and more. The curatorial intern must be able to commit to at least 16 hours of work per week for three months, beginning in June 2010, and should expect to work fulltime from September 1-20 during the 01SJ Biennial and related programs. The curatorial intern will provide general support for the programming staff and will have the opportunity to work directly with artists participating in the 01SJ Biennial as well as Steve Dietz, the Artistic Director for ZER01 and the 01SJ Biennial.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS • A high level of familiarity with contemporary art and a particular interest in “new media art” and digital culture • Attention to detail and the ability to work independently • Excellent writing and communications skills • Willingness to pitch in as needed to help ensure a world-class Biennial • Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software is essential, and basic Photoshop and video editing skills are preferred • Curatorial experience is preferred • Education or advanced experience beyond the undergraduate level is preferred

SALARY A $5,000 stipend is available.

01SJ takes place June 4-8, 2008 in San Jose, California, USA, and will feature transformative and provocative new works from world-renowned artists and performers at the cross-section of contemporary art, technology and culture. The five-day festival will incorporate exhibitions, films, concerts, performances, happenings, and nightlife occurring throughout downtown San Jose's parks, public streets, museums, theaters and clubs.

Two curatorial internships are currently available with ZER01/01SJ Festival. This is an opportunity to become an integral part of the 2nd Biennial 01SJ Festival, working directly with Festival Staff, in particular, Steve Dietz, the Artistic Director of ZER01 and the 01SJ Festival.
