Posted by Michelle Kasprzak • Monday, January 11. 2010 • Category: Jobs & Opportunities

The application date for this opportunity has passed.

49 Nord 6 Est Frac Lorraine takes a special interest in the various forms of contemporary writing and how they relate to the visual arts. Supporting art criticism and thinking about art is one of the keys projects at the new building: a 30 m2 studio flat has been converted to accommodate art critics of every nationality!
This residence offers them an opportunity to carry on with their current research, develop their thoughts on some topic in connection with the collection, or experiment with new forms of writing.

PURPOSE OF RESIDENCE
The Art critic will be meeting the players in the Saarlorlux regions (institutions, artists, association) as listed quite independently by Frac Lorraine.
He will lead the thinking process behind the Frac Lorraine collection and notably with regard to the direction towards acquisitions policy.
This reflection may be subjected to restitution in the form of a text or article (to be defined).

The Art critic will also give thought to the drafting of a possible scenario for an exhibition based on the Frac Lorraine collection.
Frac Lorraine shall make available to the Art critic the assistance of Frac personnel involved in the project and the equipment at their disposal (office, computer, telephone, car…), subject to availability.

The Art critic may be put in touch with various partner institutions or schools of Art / Architecture in the SaarLorLux region, in certain cases for the purpose of holding meetings on the current situation of the Austrian art scene and/or for the needs of his own personal research. Under no circumstances may the organisation of such meetings interfere with the period of residence.

A residence allowance of 3000 euros will be paid for the period in residence ( minimum 2 months).

1.) Additional information on the 10th Art Grandeur Nature Biennial in Seine-Saint-Denis September – November 2010, various locations in Noisy-le-Sec, Les Lilas and Pantin The city is without any doubt the most filmed subject and decor in the history of cinema. The birth of cinema coincides furthermore with the emergence of the modern metropolis. Television, video and more recently different kinds of digital tools for image & sound recording, processing and broadcasting have since then accompanied significant phases of the urbanization of the world throughout the second half of the 20th century and up till now.

All these means of expression that help us to grasp the world “at live”, whether they are appearing in complementary or conflicting ways, have shaped and will continue to shape our relationships to the city. The cinematographic, video- and media-related visions possess an imaginary potentiality which has an impact on our ways of apprehending the urban space. An urban aesthetics takes shape and transforms the metropolis and its rhythms into a flow of images, which is structured by travellings, sequence shots, depths of field, sound and luminous intensities, etc.

The 2010 edition of the international Art Grandeur Nature biennial will take this evolution of the urban imagination into an artistic and sociological consideration and thus questioning the capacity of our contemporary media tools to affect our perception of (sub)urban everyday life. The Art Grandeur Nature biennial is organized by the Department of the Seine-Saint-Denis since 1993.

Opportunity: The Core Program residency

Posted by Michelle Kasprzak • Tuesday, February 3. 2009 • Category: Jobs & Opportunities

The application date for this opportunity has passed.

The Core Program awards one- and two-year residencies to highly motivated, exceptional visual artists and art scholars who have completed their undergraduate or graduate training but have not yet fully developed a professional career. Established in 1982 within the Glassell School of Art, the teaching wing of Houston's Museum of Fine Arts (Houston, Texas, USA), the Core Program encourages intensive and innovative studio practice as well as the elaboration of an intellectual framework through which to understand that practice. Residents engage in ongoing dialogue with each other and with leading figures in art and criticism who are brought in as visitors.

In 1998, the program added critical studies residencies. These residencies also include a $10,000 annual stipend and access to facilities, including borrowing privileges at the museum's Hirsch Library and the Fondren Library at nearby Rice University. The program runs on an academic calendar, from September through May. Toward the end of each year, the artist residents mount a group show in the school's main gallery, and the critical studies residents prepare essays summarizing aspects of their independent research. These essays, as well as documentation of the resident artists' work, are gathered in a published catalogue. In addition to such writing projects, critical studies residents are challenged to curate their own separate shows using space allotted within the museum and/or school. Additional writing and curatorial opportunities are created through cooperation with other area schools and nonprofit art organizations. Like the artist residents, each critic in the program meets independently with visiting scholars and theorists, as well as the Program Director, to discuss his or her curatorial projects and overall research. In this way an environment is created that amply supports not only the production of individual work by both resident artists and critics but its reception within an intimate yet diverse creative and intellectual community. After the first year, residents may reapply for a second year.

To apply, please visit the Core Program website for further instruction. The application deadline is April 1, 2009, and all materials must be received by that date.
