Grange Prize Intern, Department of Curatorial Affairs, Art Gallery of Ontario
Twelve weeks, starting late April / early May 2011
Up to 35 hours per week (variable hours)

For one student currently enrolled in a post-secondary Museum Studies or Curatorial studies program, the Art Gallery of Ontario has an opportunity for an intern to learn about a range of project management activities.

For the length of this placement, the intern will aid the project manager in implementing the 2011 Grange Prize by promoting public engagement of the award and exhibition.

Specific activities include:

Assist project manager with the implementation of the Grange Prize website and exhibition
Assist project manager in artist residency research and development
Assist curator in exhibition development through research and other related tasks
Assist project manager and curator in planning for the prize launch event
Assist project manager in the development of social media strategies

The ideal candidate for the position of Grange Prize Intern for the department of Curatorial Affairs will possess the following qualifications, skills and abilities:

Currently enrolled in a post-secondary Museum Studies or Curatorial studies program
Knowledge of theories surrounding public engagement with art
Have used a Content Management Systems (CMS) and/or blog, such as Wordpress, and have knowledge of basic HTML
Attention to detail
Well-developed research and writing skills
Knowledge of MS Office, especially MS WORD and MS EXCEL
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills

The student selected for the internship will acquire professional experience in project planning and event planning through involvement in exhibition projects, including a variety of initiatives in addition to the Grange Prize. The intern will learn about ways in which museums can serve broad and diverse communities and will receive instruction on working with various stakeholders, including artists and sponsors. Cambridge Galleries seek a dynamic individual to join their team as Curator for an ongoing program of exhibitions in two gallery spaces within the City of Cambridge: at the main gallery, 1 North Square, and their Preston gallery, 432 King Street East.

Reporting to the Director, this curatorial position is responsible for the production of exhibitions from concept through to realization, including research, planning, organization, set-up coordination and interpretation; budget preparation and management.

The Curator must be familiar with local, provincial and national visual arts communities; have excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to work both independently and in a team oriented environment. The successful candidate will have a demonstrated knowledge of the theoretical, historical and intellectual contexts of contemporary art practices and an ability to communicate this knowledge to both specialized and general audiences.

Applicants require a fine art degree and 3 to 5 years experience in a public art gallery, preferably in contemporary curatorial work.
