April, I couldn't agree more with your blog, we have the same problems here in Scotland and in the UK in general. You might be interested in the recent research that the Visual Artists and Galleries Association has been conducting - the VAGA International Research Enquiry. You might also be interested in this http://www.parallellines.org.uk/ a programme for curatorial professional development set up by independent curator Kirsteen MacDonald, who also worked on the VIRE project and developed ion response to the findings. I've been fortunate to have taken part in the initial series of events and workshops and have found it extremely beneficial, whether it's been because of the forging of new contacts, the development of new ideas or for just getting together with other struggling yet dynamic curators. It would be great to see similar programmes start to sprout up around the globe.

Just a short note: As someone who's been dealing with life after the Master's for two years, I've seen my fair share of how young curators are adjusting. I, like some of my colleagues, took the first job offer we were given, even if that meant moving to a small city. Unfortunately, these aren't the types of curatorial jobs we were prepared for giving the glamorizing tendency of MA programs and, well, HUO. In general, there just aren't as many museum jobs out there to satisfy the number of graduates from curatorial programs. So then what? Independent's a hard path to trod, but it makes us curators realize we're more like artists than maybe we first realized.

    Dear Sir/Madam,
Why is it that when a job comes up in a Museum or Gallery you always require an Arts Degree, which is a complete waste of time, first of all being a rare art dealer for over 45 years, and at this moment I have two rare Henry Moore sculptures for sale, and not a chance would I hire any graduate with a degree over on hand experience to work with me,there is nothing better in a business than years of experience, not some graduates that the only experience they have is reading a few books,I my self have for sale some of the worlds great art,ex: Leonardo,Rubens,Rafael,Renoir, and if you think for one moment I would have some graduate handling paintings of this caliber, then you had better give your head a shake. Maybe I want to retire and apply for this position, and the only degrees I have is in religion,so how about that.

I too was bemused by the benefits package that comes wit this job especially the 'Free Tube travel and travel concessions including discounted Eurostar travel' does this mean that Eurostar will soon be available on a one day zone 6 travelcard? They also don't clarify if you get some of those natty underground branded Dr marten shoes or the underground buckle belt.

Why does this package include private healthcare? The state should be supporting NHS provision, not undermining it by funding unsustainable alternatives that divert resources from caring for the many. This disgusts me.

I have been selling art exhibited in galleries and on the internet for several years. I consider that I’m an old hand at both types of presentations and sales. Artists like me, have a vested interest in this particular online article. "CURATE OR DIE," speaks the real truth about the changing art world. This is a subject matter close to my heart and pocketbook .The title of the series is what caught my attention. This was a smart move by KW Institute for Contemp.Art in Berlin. I had to agree with every word because the museums have, or need to change how business is done in this new place in time. Exhibits are the real bread and butter as the article attests to. The thunder belongs toonline art galleries .
“The balance of exhibiting, collecting, researching, and conserving activities has shifted towards a marked concentration on exhibiting. Both the public eye and possible sponsors tend to privilege the spectacular potential inherent in exhibitions.”

Hi Michelle, Just thought I'd drop a line to say that I have been following your blog for a while. You've been doing a great job. I was also happy to find your Flickr photos from the 2009 IKT Congress in Helsinki, which we've also shared (the Athens Biennale, that is) with our fans on Facebook. I do hope to see you in the upcoming IKT Congress, which we are co-organising here in Athens. All best, Augustine.
